RWYB regatta in 2002. We're not racers and
although our Pacific Seacraft 37 is not a slug, it's no match for the racer-cruisers we knew would be participating. It sounded like fun however so we put a crew together and jumped in the fray. Well, we had a fantastic time! The race itself was as intense or low key as you want to make it and the party afterward was wonderful. We had an even better time at the 2003 RWYB and although we now keep Lastdance in Norfolk, we will definitely be in the 2004 RWYB.”
The annual Run What You Brung Regatta is the highlight of the sailing season and grand last hoorah before the season winds down. I usually have riders from some of the other boats onboard Rising Tide which makes the event even more of a sharing with fellow sailors. This year I had Jane Waddell from Bliss along with her very lovely and faithful crew member Linda. Since Bliss is a power boat and Jane is truly a sailor at heart, she likes to ride along and enjoy a day of sailing around the island. Linda, too, is an ex-sailor. Bob, the captain of Tiami, also hitched a ride this and, as usual, proved to be a master tactician and tremendous crew. His sailing skills always enhance our standing i the fleet. A couple of regattas ago, he helped us to gain first place. This year, however, we managed second behind Seawoof who was captained by the masterful Gene and his somewhat ablebodied crew, George. Just kidding George.
Of course, no regatta is complete without a great party and this years party was unbelievable. Jane arranged to have Them Eastport Oyster Boys for the entertainment. They were awesome and of course primarily sing about our favorite body of water, the Chesapeake Bay. The O Dock band consisting of Jane on the steel drum and the rest of us on any manor of percussion instruments played along with the Oyster Boys to help give a full bodied sound. I don't know if they liked the accompaniment or not but we sure did have a good time.
The 2003 RWYB will be hard to beat. Great sailing, great friends, great music, and a great day on the Bay.
